Temporary relief for caregivers while ensuring patients receive compassionate attention
Hospice Respite Care

A Well-Deserved Break for Family Caregivers

Caring for a loved one at home is an act of love, and it’s also exhausting. Respite care gives family caregivers time to rest and recharge while your loved one receives around-the-clock care in a Medicare-approved facility.

What It Is

What Is Hospice Respite Care?

Respite care is one of the four levels of hospice care covered by Medicare. When the family member who usually provides care needs a rest, your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved inpatient facility for up to five days at a time, receiving 24-hour care.

Respite care can be used more than once, on an occasional basis. Our hospice team arranges everything, and your loved one returns home when the respite stay ends.

FAQ

Questions About Respite Care

How long can respite care last?

Up to five days at a time. Respite care can be used more than once, on an occasional basis.

Can respite care be provided at home?

Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, respite care is provided in a Medicare-approved inpatient facility, not in the home.

Do I need a reason to ask for respite?

Caregiver rest is reason enough. Taking care of yourself helps you keep caring for your loved one.

Is respite care the same as inpatient care?

No. Inpatient care is for symptoms that can’t be managed at home. Respite care is for the caregiver’s rest, even when symptoms are stable.
